Spring 2016 News Stories
Panthers Win "B" Division Championship!
| The New West Panthers
brought an end to the NWBHL Spring campaign as they finished off a sweep of the Mercenaries to capture the "B" Division championship! Last season the club was ousted in the
playoffs when they were forced to play a run-and-gun style that didn't suit their game. However this post-season was classic Panthers hockey as they continually stifled their
opponents, giving up a combined six goals in their four wins. Central to that was goaltender Dave Sherwin who continually shut the door on the opponents in the late going,
including several times in the championship game. He captured the Playoff MVP with a 4-1 record, league best 2.20 Goals Against Average and a pretty nifty .895 Save Percentage.
The team spread the offense around nicely as four different players finished with 6 points. Avi Bassi and Shaydon Dosanjh each had 4-2-6 while Colton Kahle collected three
goals and three assists. Captain Scott Wilshire played set-up man ending with 2-4-6. Gary Hallatte also performed some heroics, getting a multi goal effort including the cup winner in
the final game. This was the first NWBHL title for the Panthers who just completed their third season.

Core Win "A" Division Championship!
| The South Van Core finished off their first Northwest League season in grand fashion,
shutting out a powerhouse Barons team 5-0 to complete a two game sweep of the "A" Final. Making the feat all the more
impressive was the fact that the Core played with a depleted lineup in both ends of the final, as major parts of the roster were
out of town. Shane Ram was tremendous between the pipes, not just in this game, but throughout the entire playoff run for the Core.
He would finish with a 4-0 record with an impressive 2.48 Goals Against Average. He would also post a playoff best .917 Save Percentage
and was an easy choice for Playoff MVP honours. This is his second win of that award as he also took Playoff MVP for the Warhawks during their
victorious 2014-15 "B" Div championship run. There were several important contributors on the offensive side of the ball as well. Jay Dove
would finish as the high point man on the team in the postseason, finishing with 1-6-7 in four games. Prab Jaswal was also a tower of power
for the team up front. He was a deadly scorer with 5 goals and a helper. Sean Grewal and Sunny Basi were also regular contributors to the offense, ending up
with 6 and 5 points respectively. Larry Mey
missed the championship game, but showed his dominance in the opening leg of the final. Congrats to the Core on their first NWBHL title!

Wild Weekend In The Arenex!
It was a pretty amazing few days in the NWBHL as we played a full Friday schedule to determine playoff spots, followed by the
league's inaugural Play In game on Saturday, followed by four fantastic Game 1's on Sunday!
Here's a recap of how everything went down:
(Game Video Links will start appearing over the coming days for those games that were fimed. They will be marked with this film icon- )
Week 1 Summaries...
Playoffs Begin Sunday! / Teams Nail Down Spots
The regular season will wrap up Friday with a full slate of games. Every team is in action with the
exception of the Storm, who finished off their schedule this past week. There are a few interesting races still to be decided that evening,
including first place in "A" (currently being contested by the Barons and Core) and the last "B" Div playoff spot, that has become a furious
three way battle between the Rage, Whalers and Warhawks. The latter two teams will face off against one another on Friday in a huge game. The
Rage will also need a win that night as they take on a Mercenaries squad that has only lost one game all season, and upset the Core on Sunday to
wrap up the top seed in "B". The Panthers secured a playoff spot with their big win over the Ballhogz on Sunday, and have now locked up the
third seed in the division, and a first round match-up with the Storm. The Ballhogz and Entourage have both found themselves locked into Saturday's Play In Game, which will send one of the
teams forward to play the top seed in the "A" playoffs on Sunday. The Sunday playoff schedule is now posted.
Please note the Pattullo Bridge is completely closed again this weekend.
Core Debut New Jersey Set
| The South Van Core recently debuted a sharp new set of jerseys. They come with
all the trimmings, including player names and laced collars, not to mention
matching shorts. They also include an interesting little detail of their
original duck-logo for a shoulder patch. These jerseys have taken a while to
arrive, but they were definitely worth the wait!
Outdoor Game Postponed
| The inaugural NWBHL Outdoor Game will have to wait a little longer
as scheduling issues have forced the postponement of the event. The lateness in the season of this means that we will have to wait until next Spring to find another date on the calender
for it. The Rage/Entourage match-up moves back to the Arenex at 5:00 PM with the rest of the schedule for that day also needing an alteration. The Whalers/Warhawks matchup moves
back to its original date of Friday, June 10th
Entourage and Rage Awarded Outdoor Game! /
Schedule Change For June 5th and 10th
| The Burnaby Rage and
B.C. Entourage have been awarded the premier NWBHL Outdoor Game! The teams will face off at noon on June 5th at Ron McLean Park in Burnaby. Some schedule shifting has occured to make
everything fit, however. The entire games slate from the 5th and 10th have been swapped. The biggest moves will be to the Whalers and Warhawks (who previously weren't playing on the
5th but now are), and the Saints and Barons who move from the 5th to the 10th. For the rest of the teams which were already playing both days, the overall disruption will be minimal,
mostly changing the match-ups for those days or moving a game time by an hour or two. Sorry for the inconvenience.
The NWBHL Outdoor Game!
It's another big milestone for the Northwest Ball Hockey League, as we get set to play our first outdoor game! Yes, this will be
an official league game with implications for the standings. The game will take place on Sunday, June 5th at noon in beautiful Ron McLean Park in Burnaby. The participating
teams have yet to be selected, but look for an announcement to be made shortly on that subject. For more info, click the link below...
"A" Division Play In Game!
| The NWBHL is proud to bring about an exciting new format for the "A" division
playoffs this season, the introduction of the "Play In Game". The soon to be announced divisional split will see 5 teams heading to contend for the "A" championship, with the remaining 6 playing off for the "B" div title.
Which teams end up where, will be announced next week. Though "B" will see the traditional 1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3 playoff series with a couple teams missing the cut, the "A" division will
feature a Play In Game which consists of the 4th and 5th place teams (after divisional separation) competing in a single game elimination. The winner of that game will officially earn
the designation as the 4th seed in the "A" playoffs and will take on the top seed in a best of three series as we then enter a typical playoff scenario. Due to scheduling restrictions,
The Play In Game will have to be played on Saturday, June 11th, following our last slate of games in the regular season on the 10th and before our first official playoff game day on the 12th.
George Molatore hits half century mark in games!
The NWBHL usually doesn't recognize games played milestones... that is unless they are particularly impressive!
On Sunday, George Molatore became the first player in league history to play in his 500th career game. Keeping in mind the shortness of our seasons,
this is a staggering number of games played. George has played in 40 different Ndub seasons stretching over 23 years! Trailing closely behind him, his
brother Dan currently sits at 487 and should reach that plateau in the fall. To see George's full career statistics, click the link below.
May 20th Games Scratched
The slate of games scheduled for Friday, May 20th have now been taken off the schedule. As this was the long weekend, many players will no doubt
breathe a sigh of relief. The games have been moved to Friday, June 10th, which in turn will unfortunately condense our available playoff dates. Get ready for a busy hockey schedule in June!
There are also some big announcments upcoming this week, as the NWBHL is about to unleash a couple of tasty treats! Stay tuned...
League Goalie / Playoff Qualification
Due to the difficutlies that arise in finding goaltenders, particularly during the Spring session, the NWBHL is adding a new component
to ease the burden on team managers. In addition to the rules that already exist regarding emergency goaltenders (You can borrow a goaltender off of another team's roster
for one game only and during the regular season only), but we now have signed an official "League Goalie" in Sean Kobierski. This means that he will be free to play for any
team and it will not be held against the team's single emergency goalie usage. He will have the notation (LG) beside his name in the stats to denote his status. Sean can be reached at
Due to the short regular season we are having, the playoff qualification minimum will be a pretty attainable three games for players
and one game for a goalie. As always, players that are unable to play due to injury can still recieve a game credit by being on the team's bench for a game, but please make sure that
you are down on the game roster with a number so you can be accounted for in the game stats.
Pattullo Bridge Closing
The Pattullo Bridge is beginning a summer repair schedule this week. It will be closing Friday April 29th
at 8:00 PM and will be out of service for the remainder of the weekend. If any members of your team live on the other side of the bridge, please spread the word. Though the bridge will
be open the rest of the upcoming weeks, it we be down to one lane in either direction, so give yourself some extra time to make your game as traffic will be heavy.
Dave Snyder Collects 700th Point!
The legendary Dave Snyder joined the elite 700 point club as he
hit the milestone early in his first game this season on his return to the Barons fold. Dave is entering his incredible 29th season in the Northwest League, having played
with the Barons, Rage, Time Out Hitmen, and White Rock Rangers. This was a double milestone night for Snyder as he also played in his 300th career game in the Ndub. He becomes just the
sixth player to have 700 points, joining such names as Stan McLellan, Dan Molatore, Rod Wardell, Jay Dove, and Dave Fisher. To see Dave Snyder's full career summary, click the link below.
Giants To Fly The Ballhogz Banner
The Giants are going under the name of the Ballhogz this season and debuting a comically
appropriate beer chugging, ball hogging logo! The team also finds itself
itself under new management this season with Ron Sandhu taking a much deserved
break. Vish Singh and Tarun Makkar will be taking the helm of the team this
Season Info Update
It looks like we have solidified the full league roster for the Spring '16 NWBHL season. The final count has us with 11 teams entered,
consisting of the Barons, Core, Entourage, Giants, Mercenaries, Panthers, Rage, Saints, Storm, Warhawks, and Whalers.
The first week of games is now posted, with every team in action, with the
exception of the Rage who will begin their campaign the following week. Though this first
Friday has games at 7:00, 8:00, and 9:00, we will be adding a fourth hour in
upcoming weeks. Look for the first slot to move to a 6:45 starting time when
that happens. The Sunday times will be 12:00, 1:00 and 2:00 with the
occasional 3:00 start. This will be a quick ten game season so we can still
have a couple months of summer off, with the playoffs wrapped up by the end of
June. Like the last couple of seasons, teams will start in the same pool and
the divisional separation will occur after we've had a chance to determine
which teams belong where.
The NWBHL Welcomes The Core!
The Northwest Ball Hackey League extends a warm welcome to The Core!
They've already made their mark in other leagues including most recently in Central City, but will make their Ndub debut this Spring. The team has a new logo and a
sharp looking set of jerseys on order, so look for those to debut in the coming weeks. Team GM Shane Ram leads the club which has a contingent of now former Warhawks
players that should set us up with a pretty great rivalry with the remaining
Hawks for the foreseeable future. Good luck to the Core!
Accepting Team Applications For Spring!

doubleheaders sprinkled in, but not many. Team fees will be $1650. Space is
